Why IHECS ?

Academic, applied, professional, social and creative... IHECS draws its strength and its originality from a teaching which reunites solid theoretical training and media practice.

In addition to an employability placement, students participate in numerous activities and professional vocational projects (productions workshops, masterclasses, productions and media memory) which immerse them in conditions which are almost identical to the real world.

The project’s educational methods and application is made possible owing to cooperation and structural and economic partnerships maintained with numerous players not only from the world of the media, but also from other trade and non-trade sectors.

Our teaching methods revolve around three main linchpins:

General courses

Teaching units dedicated to the major disciplines of human and social sciences form the intellectual and university basis for training, rounded off by the study of artistic forms. The teaching given is scientific which however is different from that given by the University as it has an inductive approach.

Language and expression courses

Development of language skills (written and oral communication) in French, English and Dutch or German, as well as the theory and practice of storytelling and rhetoric are also at the core of the IHECS training.

Foreign language courses given for the baccalaureate are progressively replaced by content courses in a foreign language which are adapted for professional sectors specifically selected by the department. This opening for multilingualism is reinforced by numerous possibilities of student exchanges

Media courses & workshops

IHECS is decisively adding media apprenticeships to the usual training in communication components. This third component fully justifies the applied communication qualification for our teaching.

Without demanding for all that that he becomes a media technician, the student should learn to get to know and master subtleties belonging to these different languages.

In the bachelor years, different teaching units integrating knowledge and practical and theoretical know-how will enable him to approach and acquire principles as well as the appropriate techniques:

Fixed image (photography, graphics and infographics)
Moving image (video) and sound
Web and multimedia

Depending on the chosen Master degree, the production workshops, the thesis and the master classes will enable students to perfect their skill set related to communication and media.

Profile of the IHECS graduate

To help the student to form an original and solid identity, we look to:

  • Maintain a solid presence of professionals in the teaching body (around 50%), in the jurys, and their involvement in the preparation and constant updating of programs;
  • See that media works (including practical memory) closely accompany the profession and professional techniques;
  • Maintain a contact network with companies, groups, associations, public powers and the organisation of professional meetings (seminars, symposiums, workshops, and open days...);
  • Develop educational methods for integration favouring group dynamics (examples: numerous group workshops and socalled « networking » teaching units);
  • Emphasise creativity, imagination, personality affirmation, briefs for potential and everyone’s potentialities.

This teaching approach enables us to train communicators who are set apart:

  • By their creativity as regards applied communication;
  • By their power to adapt to circumstances and to work situations;
  • By their ability to work in a team;
  • By their dynamism and their entrepreneurial attitude.
