TaalTrek, 3rd edition: BAC 3 PUB students on a language immersion programme

24.03.2026
The 3rd edition of the TaalTrek project, organised in collaboration with UCLL Hogeschool, began on 24 February in Leuven. Third-year PUB students had the opportunity to meet their Dutch-speaking counterparts to kick off a four-month language exchange.

Following two successful previous editions, the project continues to pursue the same objective: to enable students to practise a language in a real-life context, through meetings and shared activities with Dutch-speaking students.

For the third-year PUB students, this first meeting marked the start of a language and cultural exchange programme that will run throughout this second term.

Around forty students from the Language Projects of the third-year PUB course, supervised by Cécile Gaspart and Catherine Lycops, travelled to UCLL Hogeschool to meet their Flemish counterparts. This opening evening provided an opportunity to form paired ‘ ’ between our students and those from UCLL Hogeschool. These pairs will work together over the coming months through various exchange and learning activities.

The initial exchanges quickly sparked discussions and created a dynamic between the participants. Beyond language practice, these meetings also provide an opportunity to discover different backgrounds and customs, and to build bonds between students from the two partner institutions.

Throughout the term, the pairs will take part in a varied programme including cultural visits, urban explorations, classroom immersion sessions at IHECS and UCLL, as well as many other activities.

The project is led by two lecturers from our languages department, Cécile Gaspart and Catherine Lycops.

We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to our partners at UCLL – Hannah Severijns, Timothy Sirjacobs and Peggy Leën – for their warm welcome and commitment, as well as to our lecturers Etienne McGrath and Kim Sa Tran for their invaluable support.

The project is scheduled to conclude on 7 May 2026, when IHECS will in turn welcome UCLL students to LOFT58 for a final meeting to mark the end of this third edition.
